If you have been following the output of Hope Street Recordings the last few years, they’ve delved deep into a variety of sounds. Whether it’s Bombay Royale, San Lazaro, The Do Yo Thangs, or The Meltdown among others, they’ve laid the groundwork for a very special sound coming from Down Under. A standout band that has been laying proper sound foundations are The Putbacks. Steeped in deep, heavy funk, their latest release is a collaboration with Soulquarians member and diverse artist Bilal. “The Ways”, a dark and cinematic, post jazz freak style single is out there, but let’s face it, it works on so many levels. Produced by Paul Bender (Hiatus Kaiyote), this may not be the Bilal you’re used to, but really showcases his wide range of abilities and proves further why The Putbacks are a band that needs to be heard. File it under sci-fi soundtracks, dark twisted indie B-movie sounds or Italian horror movie scenes, it’s got a great late ’60’s early ’70’s feel to it. Recommended if you like Adrian Younge, BADBADNOTGOOD, El Michels Affair, Khruangbin and the like. It’s deep, it’s dark, but we like it. This single is off their self titled full length, out on November 9th. Check out the track below, you won’t be able to listen to it just once, and we mean it.
Pre-Order the record here, available on Nov. 9th on Hope Street Recordings.
