We get essentially, hundreds of music through our desk every week. Most, honestly, is not at all fitting for FMF. Not dissing people, because Kudos to anyone who is trying to make it on their own. We have a certain sound here, and the record we are speaking on today has that sound. I’d seen musician Seth Applebaum on social media a bunch, posting music, making beats, even self deprecating videos from years ago on why you shouldn’t post when you’re high. But when he posted this latest effort from his band Ghostfunk Orchestra, I heard it. That sound. “Walk Like A Motherfucker” is a blast of psychedelic soul, a cinematic, fuzzy trip from some grind house movie that Tarantino ripped some scenes from. Rising horn sections come forward to meet funky guitars and hefty drums, echo, and plenty of other fuzzed out treats throughout this trip. We’ve been noticing a trend over the past couple of years, and soundtrack/ cinema sounds are getting taken more seriously than they have by before and present musicians who respect the foundations are carrying that torch. The flip, “Isaac Hayes” continues on down the same path, punchy drums, great guitar work, and a lo-fi fuzzy feeling, this time with strings that bring it right into psychedelic territory even further. The bass line is super tough as well. This record will be on Colemine Records new imprint Karma Chief. The label is diversifying heir portfolio even further, and it’s good to see Applebaum and a grip of talented musicians lighting up stages and turntables with this sound. More power to ya, and looking forward to more from the Ghostfunk Orchestra.
