J Zone x Questlove: Give The Drummer Some

What more can we say about all around renaissance man, drummer, producer, music scholar, and genuinely good guy J Zone? The man, who has reinvented himself, learned to play drums in his thirties, dropped the rapping, and followed his dream of a working musician, and has found success at it. At present day, J is a busy man. Doing soundtracks, playing in multiple bands, touring, and yes, interviewing legends. On this particular episode of The Red Bull Music Academy Radio’s Give The Drummer Some, he interviews Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson for an hour (and let’s face it, he could’ve gone six!) about his career, influences and more. Quest breaks down his love of breakbeats, breakbeat drumming, the influence of drum and bass in the Erykah Badu collaboration “You Got Me”, as well as personal and technical aspects of drumming and the philosophy that goes behind it. From music nerd to the cool kids circle while hip hop was changing everything, as well as his rise to the top as a cultural icon, this interview is a must for any music fan. Also, if you’re a drummer, you’ll be able to geek out with these two chaps, going from track to track, breaking ish down and hurting your neck while you are nodding the whole time. (Get your notebooks out). The series includes other legends such as Leslie Ming of BT Express, Harold Brown of War, and Michael Clark among others. This is one you need to bookmark and listen to closely. Top notch. Listen to this on point interview below:
