We love a good funk and soul record like anyone, so when the little label that could, F Spot Records out of the City of Angels puts out a forty five, we’re all ears. You see, these cats have been quietly building a mini dynasty over on the Left Coast, and started out just like Colemine Records did 10+ years ago, and look where they are at now. The two record labels cross paths, as the mighty Cliff Beach gets some funky help from Colemine alums Mestizo Beat on this new track “Confident”. Beach, the DC native, headed to the land of eternal sunshine to perform about 15 years ago and has been bringing down the house ever since. Getting by with a little help from his friends Mestizo Beat, “Confident” is a summer jam if we ever have heard one. Channeling his inner Stevie with a little bit of The Honey Drippers tied in for good measure, this is definitely hot weather material. The B-Side is a swampy, raw and gritty funk track entitled “Penny Candy”. They take a trip to ‘Nawlins with this one. They’re joined by Dan Hastie from Orgone who plays the piano, and with Beach funking it up on the vocals, it for sure has that sound out of The Big Easy that pleases. We’re in need for some good funk and Mr. Cliff Beach brings it 150% on this double sider of extreme heat. Each side should come with a portable fan because you can overheat quick. Stream the record below and then grab a copy from F Spot’s Bandcamp page in translucent red or black. Top notch material once again from F Spot and their family.
